The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX was the RAF's answer to the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 — a rapid development of the Mk.V airframe fitted with the more powerful Merlin 61 engine that restored British air superiority over occupied Europe in 1942. It became the most-produced Spitfire variant of the war and the mount of choice for many of the RAF's top aces.
