Building on the proven success of the C.R. 32 "Freccia" biplane—battle-tested during the Spanish Civil War—Fiat introduced the advanced C.R. 42 "Falco" in the late 1930s. This single-seat fighter retained the classic fixed landing gear and open cockpit design while incorporating significant engineering advances: a fully aluminum and steel airframe with mixed metal and fabric covering. Powered by the Fiat A.74 air-cooled radial engine, the C.R. 42 achieved speeds up to 400 km/h and delivered exceptional maneuverability that pilots praised. However, the biplane configuration ultimately limited its combat effectiveness against the emerging generation of monoplane fighters.
