The Consolidated B-24 Liberator was the second of America's great four-engined heavy bombers of World War II — and in many respects, the more prolific one. When the Army Air Corps approached Consolidated to build B-17 Flying Fortresses under license, the company countered with a bolder proposal: they could design and build their own bomber in the same timeframe, and it would outperform the Fortress. They delivered. The B-24 went on to serve in every theater of the war, flying more sorties than any other American aircraft of the conflict.
